In 2019, it's been reported that more than 50% of farm income came from the Federal Government. There is nothing socialist about that.

Whether something is socialist depends upon if you like the person that your wealth is being redistributed to.

 

No the farm subsidies are socialist but we don’t want to call it that because we like farmers. And bailing out large corporations is also socialist but we don’t want to call that socialist either.

Capitalism in its purest form would allow market forces to weed out the unprofitable.

That’s why I call American a mixed economy.

Farmers are a Republican constituency, so it's important to not have them feel the brunt of government economic policy. This is not really socialism, it's more of an perverse feudalism. The farmers pledge loyalty to the Lord of the Manor and the Lord steals from other peasants to keep the farmers from having their tractors repossessed.

 

Socialism means the workers control the means of production.

This means that corporations don't exist.

Anything less than that is not socialism.


Communism means everybody has equal. It's never actually been done outside of indigenous tribes.

 

I guess if an argument can be made that farm subsidies are part of a quasi feudal government policy intended to curry favor it could equally be said that welfare achieves the same ends as both of these groups become beholden to the political entity cutting the checks.

Pure laissez faire capitalism would never accept either scenario but it has never existed.

So all government entitlements are not part of capitalism and if one assumes that what is not capitalism is at least partially socialism then any movement away from pure capitalism is a movement toward socialism.

The trick is to find the balance and it seems to me that the best economic system is one that a government’s constituency think is a good and fair system be it capitalist or socialist leaning.
